Interesting facts
Elm wood is extraordinarily resistant to water: if permanently submerged, it does not deteriorate. For this reason, it has historically been used to build boats, bridges, pile dwellings, dams, and carpentry structures in damp environments. An ancient tree with a history spanning thousands of years.
Position
In Mediterranean climates, it should be placed outdoors in full sunlight all year round. In colder areas, it may lose its leaves during winter, behaving like a deciduous tree, and then sprout again in spring.
Watering
Abundant in summer, moderate in spring. Avoid waterlogging: always check that the substrate does not remain excessively wet between waterings.
Pruning and shaping
Ulmus parvifolia responds particularly well to pruning and forms secondary branches with great ease. Prune preferably in spring or late summer, leaving 1–2 leaves on each shoot. Wiring is possible all year round, with particular care during the faster spring growth.
