Frequently asked questions about office plants

A quick guide to choosing the right plants for home offices, remote work, and low-light offices.

What are the best low-light office plants?

The most low-light-tolerant office plants are Sansevieria trifasciata, Zamioculcas zamiifolia, Pothos aureus, Aglaonema, and Aspidistra elatior. They tolerate environments with low indirect light, survive even 2–3 meters from a window, and do not require direct sunlight.

For particularly dark offices, supplement with a 6500K white LED grow light switched on for 6–8 hours a day during working hours.

Which desk plant requires the least maintenance?

The Zamioculcas zamiifolia is the most indestructible desk plant: water it only every 3–4 weeks in summer and every 6–8 weeks in winter. It survives extended periods without water and tolerates low light. Perfect for frequent travelers or anyone who forgets to water their plants.

Low-maintenance alternatives: Sansevieria, Beaucarnea recurvata (elephant-foot tree), and Peperomia for small desks.

Do office plants really purify the air?

Yes, but with limitations. The renowned 1989 NASA Clean Air Study demonstrated that Spathiphyllum, Sansevieria, Dracaena, and Pothos absorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene released by furniture, paints, and electronic equipment.

Please note: the effectiveness of the NASA study was measured in sealed environments. In a real office with air circulation, at least 3–5 plants per 15 sq m are needed for a noticeable benefit. Plants do not replace a professional air purifier, but they contribute to overall well-being.

Do office plants really increase productivity?

Yes. The 2014 study by the Universities of Exeter and Cardiff demonstrated that workplaces enhanced with plants saw an increase in productivity of up to 15%, creativity of 47%, and perceived well-being of 38%.

Plants reduce cortisol (the stress hormone), improve concentration through visual micro-breaks, and reduce eye strain from hours in front of a computer. For more information, read our complete guide to plants for working from home.

How do you water office plants?

The golden rule: check the top 2–3 cm of potting soil before watering. If it is dry, water thoroughly; if it is still moist, wait. Always empty the saucer after 10 minutes to prevent waterlogging.

Suggested frequency: Sansevieria and Zamioculcas every 3–4 weeks, Pothos and Philodendron every 10–14 days in summer, and Spathiphyllum and Calathea every 7 days. In winter, always reduce watering by 30–50%.

Can I use LED grow lights for plants in an office without windows?

Yes. In offices without windows or with insufficient natural light, use full-spectrum LED grow lights with 15–30 actual watts, turned on for 10–12 hours a day. Position the light 30–50 cm from the leaves.

A simpler alternative is weekly rotation. Move the plant to a bright room for 24–48 hours each week to let it “recharge.”

How many plants are needed for a 10–15-square-meter home office?

For a 10–15-square-meter home office, 3–5 plants of different sizes are recommended, arranged across three visual levels:

  • A large floor plant (Monstera Deliciosa, Beaucarnea, Ficus Lyrata) to create presence and define the space
  • A medium-sized plant on a shelf or cabinet (Sansevieria, Zamioculcas, Aglaonema) to balance the height
  • A small plant on the desk (Peperomia, Hoya Kerrii, Fittonia) for close visual contact while working

This “three-level rule” creates an optimal biophilic effect and increases the perception of well-being.

Do office plants combat dry air from air conditioners?

Yes. 3–5 plants in a 15-square-meter room can increase relative humidity by 5–10% through leaf transpiration, mitigating dry air caused by heating and air conditioning. This can help with dry eyes, itchy skin, and respiratory irritation typical of air-conditioned environments.

Most effective plants for releasing moisture: Spathiphyllum, Calathea, Boston Fern, and Areca Palm. To enhance the effect, mist the leaves 2–3 times a week with distilled water.

How can I care for office plants when I’m on vacation or away from home?

For absences of 1–2 weeks: water thoroughly before leaving, move the plants away from direct sunlight, and close the shutters halfway. For longer absences, use drip irrigation systems with a reservoir, pots with an integrated water reservoir, or switch to hydroponics for species that tolerate it (Pothos, Sansevieria, Dracaena).

Sansevieria, Zamioculcas, and Beaucarnea can easily go 3–4 weeks without water, making them ideal plants for people who work from home but travel often.
