Russelia (Russelia equisetiformis), also known as firecracker plant or coral plant, is a trailing flowering plant: its slender, flexible branches become covered with small, bright red tubular flowers. It arrives in a hanging basket ready to hang and is ideal for anyone who wants to add colour and movement to balconies, terraces and verandas.

How to care for it

Light

It prefers sunny or partially shaded positions: the more light it receives, the more abundant the flowering. Outdoors, choose a spot where it gets direct sunlight for much of the day.

Water

Water thoroughly and allow the soil to dry out between waterings: approximately every 3 days in summer and every 7 days in winter, after checking that the soil is dry to the touch. Avoid waterlogging, which causes root rot.

Temperature

The ideal temperature is between 15 and 25 °C, and it tolerates up to 30 °C. It is not frost-hardy: protect it from the cold and prevent the temperature from dropping below 5 °C by moving it to a bright place. Ideal humidity is moderate, between 40% and 60%.

Fertiliser

In spring and summer, use a balanced liquid fertiliser every 30 days.

Soil, repotting and pruning

It needs well-drained soil, such as a mixture of peat, sand and perlite. Repot it when the pot becomes too small for the roots. Lightly pruning the longest branches maintains its shape and encourages new flowering shoots.
