How to care for Alocasia
How to care for Alocasia
Our guidelines for helping it grow healthy and strong
Alocasia, also known as “elephant ears”, is a rhizomatous perennial plant that we love at our nursery for its large, decorative leaves. Native to Southeast Asia, this plant is a horticultural hybrid that brings an exotic, lush touch to your indoor spaces.
The right position
Alocasia prefers bright but indirect light. It is important to avoid exposure to direct sunlight, which could scorch its delicate leaves. Place it in a well-lit spot, sheltered from direct sun.
When and how to water it
Watering Alocasia requires care. From April to October, water when the top 5 cm of compost feels dry to the touch. During winter, reduce watering to a minimum to prevent root rot.
Temperature and humidity
Alocasia thrives in environments with minimum temperatures of 16°C. It is important to maintain high humidity to prevent problems such as brown leaf edges and red spider mites. A warm, humid environment is ideal for this plant.
The right fertilizer
During the growing season, from April to October, we recommend using a general-purpose liquid fertilizer according to the directions on the label. This will help your Alocasia maintain lush, healthy foliage.
The pot and soil
For the substrate, choose a peat-free, well-draining compost for houseplants. A mixture of 3 parts compost and 1 part horticultural grit is ideal for ensuring the right drainage and nourishment.
How to propagate it
Alocasia can be propagated by separating offsets or dividing the rhizome. These operations are recommended in spring, with rhizome division carried out in late spring or early summer.
Our final advice
Alocasia is a plant that requires a little attention, but its beauty makes every effort worthwhile. Be sure to monitor the humidity and avoid overwatering in winter. With the right care, your Alocasia will become a true green jewel in your home.
