Frequently asked questions about houseplants that thrive in low light
Which houseplants are most resistant to low light?
The six most resilient low-light houseplants are Sansevieria trifasciata, Zamioculcas zamiifolia, Aspidistra elatior, Pothos (Epipremnum aureum), Calathea, and Spathiphyllum. Sansevieria and Zamioculcas can survive even in environments with only artificial light, thanks to their rhizomes, which store water and nutrients. Aspidistra tolerates deep shade and is called the "cast-iron plant" precisely because of its exceptional hardiness.
Which plant should you choose for a windowless bathroom?
For a windowless bathroom, Sansevieria cylindrica and Zamioculcas zamiifolia are the two best choices. Both survive on the ceiling's artificial light alone, provided it stays on for at least 4–6 hours a day. The bathroom's natural humidity is an advantage: Sansevieria, Zamioculcas, and Spathiphyllum appreciate it. We recommend moving the plant to a brighter environment once a week for 24 hours to help it photosynthesize.
How often should low-light plants be watered?
Low-light plants need less watering than plants in full sun. Sansevieria and Zamioculcas: every 15–20 days in winter, every 7–10 days in summer. Aspidistra and Pothos: every 7–10 days all year round. Calathea and Spathiphyllum: every 5–7 days because they prefer soil that is always slightly moist.
Rule of thumb: stick your finger 3 cm into the potting soil. If it is still damp, wait 2–3 days.
Can low-light plants be kept in an office?
Yes, low-light plants are ideal for offices. Fluorescent or ceiling LED lighting is sufficient for Sansevieria, Zamioculcas, Aspidistra, and Pothos. These species require very little care and can survive even weeks of absence during holidays and extended weekends.
According to the NASA Clean Air Study, Sansevieria and Spathiphyllum also help purify the air of benzene, formaldehyde, and xylene.
Are low-light plants toxic to dogs and cats?
Some are toxic, while others are safe. The following are toxic to dogs and cats if ingested: Zamioculcas zamiifolia, Pothos, Spathiphyllum, and Calathea (the latter is only mildly irritating). The following are safe: Aspidistra elatior and most Sansevieria varieties in small amounts (mild irritation may occur if ingested in large quantities).
If you have pets that chew on leaves, we recommend Aspidistra or placing other plants out of reach. Source: ASPCA Toxic Plants Database.
